In 2023, the Loy Krathong festival will be held from 27 to 28 November, with Chiang Mai's grand procession of floats on the last night. It is a way of paying respect to the goddess of the river for the water provided and repenting for dirtying the river. The festival occurs under the full moon, thus creating a beautiful sight. Traditional floats (krathongs) are also set adrift on the Ping River. In addition, there are fireworks, float contests, boat races, lantern contests, and beauty contests. Lanna-style hot air balloons, which are considered by locals to rid themselves of their troubles, are lighted and sent drifting up into the sky.
